in1955, Victoria Town, Manchester, Jamaica, West Indies. Irie busked from an
early age and performed in the DJ-style at school concerts, in spite of the fact
that he had little experience of the Jamaican dancehall. In 1980 he emigrated to
Toronto, Canada where he initially worked with the Upsetter. In 1983 Irie joined
the Casino Royal sound system for two years before moving on to Black Roots. His
notoriety led to an invitation to record with Leroy Sibbles of the Heptones. The
Studio One veteran had set up his own label and released Irie’s debut, ‘Every
Massive Has To Rock’, under the Gold Key imprint. The song proved a hit in
Canada and led to the release of ‘Couldn’t Tired Fe See You’ and ‘Baby Do It’.
The DJ won the Canadian Reggae Music Award, which resulted in him supporting
artists such as Dennis Brown, Burning Spear and Lieutenant Stitchie when they
performed in Toronto. In 1990 Irie released ‘All I Want For Christmas’ which
faltered although he regained credibility when he performed at Reggaemania. The
show featured Irie alongside Lovindeer, Shabba Ranks and Little Kirk. Irie
continues to perform although his popularity is confined to the local Canadian
reggae scene.
