BRIGHT
RECORDS
Independent label: Bright Records had two
distinct phases to its existence. It started out in early 1978 as an
offshoot of Anchor's in-house publishing company; Anchor's Martin Wyatt intended
it to be an outlet for records by Punk band The Adverts. First out of the
blocks was a single, 'No Time To Be 21' b/w 'New Day Dawning' (BR-1; 1/78),
which has a scratched-out Anchor catalogue number, ANC-1051, on the run-in and
just about made it into the Top 40. In February the single was followed by
an LP, 'Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts' (BRL-201). Manufacture and
distribution were by CBS, as they were for all Anchor records at that
time. Wyatt and Charlie Crane were leaving Anchor to set up their own
label. The pair had reached an agreement with Anchor managing director Ian
Ralfini to the effect that Bright could be used for all of the acts recorded by
Wyatt. After that, no more was heard of Bright for five years or so.
It finally reappeared in the summer of 1983, with singles now numbered in a
BULB-0 series. BULB-1 was a reissue of the Adverts' 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes',
previously on Anchor, and the numbers reached at least BULB-12. Bright
Music exists today, as a publishing company owned by Martin Wyatt. Distributed
By PRT Records. Minipops was a television series broadcast in 1983. Designed
primarily for younger viewers, it consisted of music performances on a brightly
coloured set featuring preteen children singing then-contemporary pop music hits
and older classics. The children were usually made to look like the original
performers, including clothing and make-up. The brainchild of Martin Wyatt, the
show was cancelled after the first year (due to the controversial adult lyrics),
but a new kid spin-off group from London called the Mini-Pops was created and
they released albums by K-tel in 1982 and 1983. Their popularity soared in
Canada after a tour there in 1983, prompting a final album on K-tel
("Christmas", K-Tel NC-584)). With the rights by then picked up by Quality
Records in Canada, the Christmas LP was quickly re-issued on Quality (QRSP-1012,
in 1984). A couple of LP's followed in 1985 & 1986 (also on Quality
Records).
