DOCTOR JAZZ
RECORDS
Independent label: Doctor Jazz was a
Jazz label launched by Bob Thiele in early 1983 to release new sounds (including
those of his wife Teresa Brewer) and reissues of old Signature recordings. It is
not completely clear when the label was first introduced. Reportedly the name
was first used for a production firm Bob Thiele started in 1976. In 1977 it is
reported that there are plans to launch the Doctor Jazz label in January 1978
but it seems that this never happened. In 1983 there are reports that Teresa
Brewer's new release will be on Thiele's "new label" called Doctor Jazz. It
managed at least two singles. It issued singles in 7 AS-100 and 3500 numerical
series. Distributed By PRT Records Ltd Records. Lonnie Liston Smith was born
28th December, 1940 in Richmond, Virginia, U.S.A. He was introduced to music at
an early age by his father, and learned piano, tuba, trumpet and voice in high
school and college. After graduating from Baltimore's Morgan State College with
a Bachelor of Science degree in music education, he soon launched himself into
performance, working with the house band at the Royal Theater, Baltimore. He
moved to New York and nurtured his talent with jazz greats like Art Blakey and
Miles Davis, moving from acoustic jazz to fusion, before forming his own group
Lonnie Liston Smith And The Cosmic Echoes in 1973. He is renowned for defying
genres, blending atmospheric fusion, soul and funk and is often quoted as a
strong influence on acid jazz. He is still writing and touring.
