Zaxtogo, they started building there own studio (from an old chicken hut outside
Thornbury Bristol) in order to pursue a particular 'sound'. there hope was an
extension of Pete Gabriels ethnic sound (for example on 'Biko') but hadn't
appreciated the costs (Sampler for example) being hopelessly beyond there
budget, so they used simple 'effects' to get the sound. Using a riff from the E'
string an acoustic guitar and recording a Roland 606 through the auxiliary
output of a Carlsbro 100 Watt P.A. amplifier Pete Waller and Jon Mills set about
capturing this sound by recording at SAM Studios Stokes Croft Bristol home of
legendary Steve Street and Merv Woolford. The single was 'Cut' at Prime Cuts
Vinyl Factory in London for the princely sum of £250 including inner label,
sleeve, print and design (by Jon Mills) they printed off 500 to start with
touting them around Record Companies, BBC, and contacts from they Kemps
Directory 1984 edition. Favourable reviews from local music mag Venue Magazine
led to the band ZaxTogo being invited to perform at the local WOMAD
