Independent label: American.
A&M was founded in 1962 in Los Angeles by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss; it
relocated to Hollywood the following year. Initially an MOR company it
diversified over the decades, building up a roster of UK acts and licensing
others; it had huge success in the '70s and '80s with The Carpenters,
Supertramp, Peter Frampton, The Police, and many others. As a result of all
this, A&M came to be described as 'the most successful independent record
company in history'. In the UK, A&M product was licensed to EMI and
came out on the Stateside label until the end of 1964, at which point Pye took
over the licensing and began issuing A&M's records on the Pye International
label. A&M made its debut as an actual label here in April 1967, again
via a licensing deal with Pye. Numbering of A&M singles was in an
AMS-700 series at first; in March 1972 this changed to AMS-7000. The
licensing agreement expired in April 1969, and was replaced by a pressing and
distribution one. A&M 'existed by courtesy of Island' until September
1969, presumably relying on that company for marketing; from September it acted
as an independent in its own right. The pressing and distribution deal
with Pye continued, and was renewed in August 1971, but in April 1974 A&M
switched from Pye to CBS; CBS was responsible for manufacture and distribution
for the remainder of the decade. A&M handled its own marketing during
the CBS era and presumably before that. AMPP 6001 AMPP 6001 Was 6 x 7" singles
with printed foldout in a PVC pack featuring re-issues of AMS 7348, 7381, 7402,
7474, 7494 + The Bed's Too Big Without You all on blue vinyl with new catalogue
number and each with insert. The last letter of each new catalogue number adds
up to spell P O L I C E. The The Party Party Pack was a Six disc promo-only set
issued to plug the film "Party Party" and its Soundtrack LP. In a
Party Party sleeves with tri-fold insert in a printed fold-out wallet.
