Independent label: After starting Tamla Records in January 1959, Berry Gordy founded a second label, Motown Records, in September 1959.
Also in 1959, Gordy purchased the property that would become Motown's Hitsville U.S.A. studio. The photography studio located in the back of the property was modified into a small recording studio and the Gordys moved into the second floor living quarters. Within a few years, Motown would occupy several neighboring houses with administrative offices, mixing, mastering and rehearsal studios. Despite losing Holland–Dozier–Holland, Norman Whitfield, and a number of its other hitmakers by 1975, Motown still had a number of successful artists during the late 1970s and 1980s. In Britain Tamla and Motown were combined, in the familiar EMI-distributed Tamla Motown label. The Tamla part was dropped in October 1976, with the release of TMG 1053, and a new label design was adopted.First issued in the UK with it's own logo by EMI in March 1965. Previous material from Berry Gordy's stable of labels was released in the UK on London, Fontana, Oriole and Stateside. Seminal soul label noted for it's in house writers, musicians and stringent quality control. Roll call includes Supremes, Temptations, Miracles, Stevie Wonder, Martha & Vandellas, Four Tops - in fact too many to mention. In 1976 Tamla was dropped from the title and the label become solely Motown. In 1985 Motown Numbers Were Then Changed To The RCA / BMG Numbering System Starting With The Letters ZB And 5 Numbers. In 1992 Motown Was Acquired By Polydor And They Started Using The TMG Matrix Numbering System Again And A New Look Label - A Large M Light Blue Motown Logo With A Pink Background. Distributed By EMI and RCA Records.
