Independent label: New Musical Express
Usually abbreviated to NME. A music magazine occasionally issuing cover tapes
and CDs. The original red 'stenciled-style' & iconic logo by Barney Bubbles.
Radically changed in mid 2010. GIV was a series of 7" EPs was given away with
issues of NME between 1985 and 1987. Each EP was heavily promoted on the cover
of the NME issue it came with, in most cases including the headline "FREE E.P."
Each EP has three or four tracks by different artists. Most tracks are
previously unreleased, and include live versions and "NME versions". The labels
of each release are branded with "33⅓" superimposed over the "NME" logo. The
series has a unique catalog number prefix of "GIV", presumably referring to
their giveaway status, as described by the text on each label "Given free with
NME.
