Distributed By CBS and P.R.T Records. Detroit Emeralds An American
soul group. Initially formed as “The Emeralds” in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the
1960s by the four Tilmon brothers Abrim, Ivory, Cleophus, and Raymond. In the
late 1960s Abrim and Ivory Tilmon with James Mitchell moved to Detroit and
reformed the group as the “Detroit Emeralds”. They signed with Westbound Records
in 1970. Between 1971–1973 their backing band were Chapter 8. Their best known
songs were “Feel The Need In Me”, “Do Me Right”, “You Want It, You Got It” and
"Baby Let Me Take You (In My Arms)”. In the mid-1970s the group began to fall
apart and in 1977 Abrim Tilmon hired Paul Riser, Maurice King and Johnny Allen
as permanent members. By the late 1970s there were two parallel groups
performing live as the (Detroit) Emeralds. Former members James Mitchell and
Marvin Willis formed the disco-soul group The Floaters. Coast to Coast were a
British band from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, that was signed to Polydor
Records. They are best known for their 1981 top 5 hit in the UK with "(Do) The
Hucklebuck". The band were formed in 1977 by bassist Bud Smith and guitarist Bob
Debank, who recruited Alan Mills as lead vocalist, Graham Woofe on drums and,
later, saxophonist Sonnie Torlot. Earl Barton replaced Woofe at a later date.
The follow-up release, a cover version of "Let's Jump the Broomstick", peaked at
number 28 in June 1981. The group disbanded in 1982. Smith and Torlot retain the
performing rights to the band name and several line-ups have since been
attempted with new members for live performances, but with little commercial
success. The single "(Do) The Hucklebuck" has been made available on a number of
various artists compilation CDs, to date: however, follow-up hit single "Let's
Jump the Broomstick" and parent album Coastin' have yet to be made available on
CD. Lead singer Alan Mills died on 21 July 2016, whilst replacement lead singer
Sandy Fontaine (Alex Giannini) died on 2 October 2015.
